About Our School

Ha‘aheo has one class of each grade for Kindergarten through 6th grade. It is within this setting that we work towards realizing our mission, to “provide a safe and nurturing learning environment where high quality, relevant and engaging instruction will prepare all students for opportunities of the future.”

In recent years, we adopted a slogan that is intended to be more student friendly in exemplifying who are are as a school. Our slogan is "Ha‘aheo Kākou", meaning "We Are Proud", which fits perfectly with the history of our school.

Ha‘aheo firmly believes that developing students’ work habits and attitudes (GLO’s) through a rigorous, integrated, and engaging curriculum will help students achieve academically and socially. Formative classroom instruction, reflective goal setting, and understanding of the standards will result in increased numbers of students achieving proficiency of the standards. We utilize collaborative Data Teams to look at our student achievement data regularly and make decisions that drive how we deliver instruction to our students. Combined with the daily instructional adjustments that are driven by formative assessment, it is our hope that we will be responsive and timely in meeting the needs of our students.

The feeling of ʻohana is prevalent at Haʻaheo as we uphold the time-honored traditions of our school. To begin each week our entire school gathers together to perform our oli, Aloha No E Hilo E, and school song, Mele O Haʻaheo. During this time we refocus our intentions on our strategy of the week, provide special recognition and acknowlegement to student achievements and get our bodies moving to help all students start the week ready to learn. We continue to encourage the idea of unity as our older students participate in buddying with our youngest students each week to read together, and we host several family events each year to provide time to strengthen the bond between home and school. In addition to our annual Open House, we also host events such as our Fall Festival, Holiday Jingle and STEM nights.

As we move through the 21st Century, Ha‘aheo strives to provide both technological and hands-on experiential learning for our students. With 1:1 technology we make every effort to ensure that our students are prepared for the real world. In 2014-2015, we made significant progress by implementing the use of 1:1 devices in grades 3-6, and in 2015-2016 we expanded 1:1 technology access to K-6. We also provide extracurricular experiences through our Track Team, Heluhelu Bowl Team, Science Olympiad Team, and our participation in Hilo Highʻs Elementary Band Program so that students leaving Ha’aheo will be well-rounded citizens.

It is our goal to provide a high-quality academic and social experience for each of the students who pass through our school, and we appreciate each of our families deeply.

Haʻaheo Kākou!
